Surviving The First 2 Weeks With Your Newborn
Establish a WAKE-FEED-PLAY-SLEEP schedule. Newborns can only tolerate about 45 minutes of awake time, this includes their feeding. Start a bedtime and nap routine right from day one.
Surviving The First 2 Weeks With Your Newborn
Break up your baby's day & night into 12 hour blocks, example: Morning begins at 8am, naps every 45 minutes to 1 hour, bedtime in bassinet or crib between 8pm-9pm (depending on ending of last nap). Work on getting baby to have full feeds and beware of the snack & snoozer baby. As much as possible try NOT to let your baby fall asleep while eating. All night feeds should take place where the baby sleeps (their room or by bassinet; NOT in front of the TV).

Take care of yourself.

Bringing a child into the world is hard work. You need to try and nap when your newborn naps. Everything else can wait, the two of you are what matters most during this time. Don't be afraid to ask for help from those around you

Starting your baby's bedtime routine with a nice warm bath is a great way to help cue your baby that it's time to begin to shut down for bedtime. 

Signs Your Newborn is Tired:

  • Crankiness - can look a lot like hunger
  • Red rimmed eyes
  • Rubbing eyes, nose, ears   (@ 3 months)
  • 7 mile stare
  • Arching back, or twisting
  • Turning his/her head into something
